Finding Lost Files on Computer Using Agent Ransack
Learn how to search for files on your PC using Agent Ransack
Agent Ransack is
the freeware version of FileLocator Pro. In my work, I have
thousands of text documents and try to keep them all filed in an orderly
manner so that I can find them at a later date. Sometimes though, I
can not find a file that I created some time ago. I got frustrated
with the standard file searching tool that is part of my PC's operating
system. I started searching online for a better freeware search tool
and found Agent Ransack.
Agent Ransack is
very fast, allows you to search by partial filename, text within the
document and allows for wildcard searches. The feature I like best
is that it shows part of the document's text in the search results.

Searching
for Files by Text within the File
-
Type the text
you are searching for in the Containing Text field.
-
To speed your
search you can modify the Look in: field to direct the search to
a specific folder on your hard drive. This is very beneficial
because of the size of hard drives these days. In addition, you
don't want the software wasting time needlessly searching through all of
your program files

Searching
for Files by File Type, Using a Wildcard
In this example I
am going to search for all GIF images in the folder containing this
website's images.
-
Enter a wildcard
(shift 8 = *) which represents any combination of letters or numbers and
then the file type for which you are searching. As you can see
below, I entered '*.gif'.
-
Click on Start
Search
The same can be
done for '*.jpg' when searching for JPEG pictures, or '*.doc' if you are
searching for a Microsoft Word document or '*.xls' if searching for a
Microsoft Excel document.
